Accelerating the pace of medtech innovation at UNC

preliminary sketch to product - example of Tracheostomy Tube Monitor project

Medical device development can be complicated and intensive—but it's not impossible.

NC TraCS offers FastTraCS: an experienced team of biomedical engineers who identify solvable problems at UNC Hospitals and swiftly develop solutions.

The team provides support at every level of design—from preliminary sketches on paper, to prototypes, to validation of commercially tractable solutions. Starting from seemingly unattainable ideas, all the way through to initial and advanced prototyping, FastTraCS offers multi-level support for all phases of device development.

Visit the newly-designed FastTraCS website to see examples:

Tracheostomy Tube MonitorTracheostomy Tube Monitor sketch An ENT Physician requested a solution to accidental decannulation in pediatric patients with tracheostomy tubes. FastTraCS designed and prototyped two separate sensor mechanisms to detect decannulation: a contact switch approach and a light-detection approach. (read more)

Urinary Catheter DeviceUrinary Catheter Device model Medical device innovators approached FastTraCS seeking assistance with translating a pen and paper sketch of their device design to a 3D model. FastTraCS engineered a 3D model of the device in several different configurations during use and prototyped the device in the open and closed versions. (read more)

Tamper Deterrent CVC DeviceTamper Deterrent CVC Device prototype UNC Hospital Medicine requested help to engineer a device that will deter patients from exploiting their central venous catheter devices as a convenient route of administration for illicit drugs. FastTraCS designed and prototyped two different locking mechanisms for the device, both accessed with a contactless key. (read more)

FastTraCS also offers a toolkit designed for healthcare practitioners, researchers, and administrators seeking to identify opportunities to co-create solutions through technology development, process development, or other means.
