LCCC: Engaging the Generations

Thu. 15 Jun, 2023 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Engaging the Generations: Genetics, Genomics & Black Families

This virtual event aims to raise awareness about the impact of having candid family dialogues to better understand and confront cancer risks within Black families.

Panelists will share how cancer screening, genetic testing, and knowing your family’s history play an important role in your health and wellness. We are delighted to invite you to this interactive discussion partnering experts, healthcare professionals, and thought leaders from UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, UNC School of Medicine, CREATE Initiative, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, and Touch4Life.

Speakers include: Marjory Charlot, MD, MPH, MSc, Medical Oncologist and Assistant Director of Community Outreach and Engagement at UNC Lineberger; Mya Roberson, MSPH, PhD, Assistant Professor, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health; and Joannie M. Ivory, MD, MSPH, Fellow, Hematology & Oncology, UNC Lineberger.

They’ll share the facts of genetic and genomic testing and will discuss how sharing the family history across genders and ages can leave a legacy of health for all generations. Participants will also receive a Conversation Guide and Family Health History Tree to use at upcoming family gatherings as a practical tool to get the conversations flowing with their loved ones.

This dynamic discussion is open to everyone who is eager to bridge the generations, share stories, and promote health and well-being within Black families.
