Course Summary:

In this course, participants will learn to use the Twitter Application Programming Interface to retrieve tweets for use in research. We will cover R packages to connect to the Twitter API, retrieve tweets from specific users or based on keywords, and extract follower networks (i.e. who follows who). Participants should register for a Twitter developer account at least a few days in advance of the class at https://developer.twitter.com/en, and should install R and RStudio on their computers.

Instructor: Matthew Wigginton Bhagat-Conway

Matthew Wigginton Bhagat-Conway is an Assistant Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning and a consultant in the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science. His research interests are in travel behavior, urban transportation, and statistical methods for transportation data analysis. He is available to assist researchers with statistics and data analysis.Dr. Bhagat-Conway has a PhD and MA in Geography from Arizona State University, and a BA in Geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to graduate school, he was a software developer and project manager for Conveyal, a public transport planning consulting firm, and a fellow in the Data Science for Social Good fellowship at the University of Chicago.

TraCS is sponsoring a 3-day course in RCR. The course covers all the NIH-required topics for the first phase of responsible conduct of research training including topics in a recent NIH notice (Feb 2022). Individuals who have had prior RCR training may volunteer to serve as discussion leaders for the course to document ongoing RCR exposure. This is based on need for NIH training grants.

In order to receive credit for course completion, participants must attend all three sessions. There is no charge for the course.

You are invited to join the STAR Clinical Research Network at our upcoming Quarterly Update Meeting. The STAR CRN is part of a national network funded by PCORI and designed to provide support for patient-centered outcomes research (PCORnet). This network currently includes 8 Clinical Research Networks (CRNs). PCORnet has reach across the country with over 60 health systems engaged, reaching over 80 million patients. The STAR CRN includes: Vanderbilt Health System, the Vanderbilt Healthcare Affiliated Network, Meharry Medical College, UNC Health Care System, Duke Health Care System, Health Sciences of South Carolina, Wake Forest Baptist Health, and Mayo Clinic.

These systems comprise scores of academic and community hospitals, hundreds of practices and over 14 million patients nationally. The populations cared for by STAR CRN partner sites are diverse in age, race, ethnicity and urban/rural status. The objective of our CRN is to robustly support projects in comparative effectiveness research, pragmatic clinical trials, and other key research areas. Our network can provide access to a broad array of clinical data, patients, providers, and systems to address an array of research questions.
