Join an interdisciplinary team to address ethics of artificial intelligence in biomedicine

iTHRIV is pleased to be a sponsor of the 2021-2022 Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab (BDSIL). This year's topic is Ethical Challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Biomedicine.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has great potential to assist in biomedical decision making. However, such systems are not immune from making erroneous recommendations, struggling to maintain patient privacy, and which give rise to vexing questions about their suitability across genders, ethnic, or cultural communities. The goal of the 2021-2022 BDSIL is to foster the formation of new interdisciplinary collaborations which will generate creative strategies for addressing ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) in biomedicine.

This BDSIL will promote collaboration between quantitative and biomedical researchers towards the development of novel or significantly adapted models, methods, and approaches for overcoming difficult ethical challenges of applying AI technologies in biomedicine. It is anticipated that inter-disciplinary collaborations formed during the Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab will result in new peer-reviewed publications or NIH/NSF grant proposals to further develop, refine, and test hypotheses and develop original research project ideas.

There will be 4 mandatory microlabs (October 1, April 8, May 13, & June 3). The in-person 5-day Innovation Lab will take place June 13-17, 2022.

To learn more and apply for the 2021-2022 BDSIL, visit innovation.lab.virginia.edu.

The application process is OPEN. Applications due Friday, July 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Based in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia, the Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab is made possible by a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (1R25GM139080-01), support from iTHRIV (NIH Grant # UL1TR003015) and the UVA Brain Institute.
