FastTraCS offers new design service for medical device innovation

From Inspiration to Innovation

FastTraCS Design Service logo

The NC TraCS Institute's commercialization service, FastTraCS, is now offering design services to assist innovators as they translate their ideas for medical devices from napkin sketch to reality. Services include:

CAD assistance

For fully-baked, dimensioned design concepts that can be fast-tracked from napkin sketch to 3D CAD. These design concepts are often presented as pen and paper sketches that the submitter would like translated into a 3D part or parts. (Part geometry is nearly completely defined; some fine tuning expected.)

Product incubation and development

For design concepts which are more idea-based and require additional validation and brainstorming before they can be translated into workable concepts. (These design concepts may be promising and address a particular unmet need, but need more work.)

Design Lab

For half-baked and fully-baked ideas or device designs which the submitter would like to discuss with the FastTraCS team to determine feasibility. FastTraCS' experience in medical device engineering, FDA and device quality regulation, and reimbursement will provide an instructive path for the applicant as they further their idea from inspiration to innovation.

Each design concept will be reviewed during an initial consultation. Project scope and final deliverables (including potential prototypes) will be discussed and agreed upon before design work begins. All UNC Health providers and UNC faculty and staff are eligible. Current hourly rates may apply.

Note: Intellectual Property (IP) inventorship and ownership will be designated according to state and federal law as well as institutional policy. In most cases, this will mean all members contributing to claims (reduced to practice) will be considered inventors, and the institution will have ownership rights. (see: UNC Patent and Invention Policy)
