N3C Data Enclave hits 1 million milestone

The National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) Data Enclave is one of the largest collections of clinical data related to COVID-19 symptoms and patient outcomes in the United States.

This one-of-a-kind resource can be utilized by the research community to study COVID-19 and identify potential treatments. It now has data derived from electronic health records of more than 4 million people, including more than 1 million patients who tested positive for COVID-19. Researchers that are approved to access this centralized resource have initiated more than 150 projects to explore clinically important questions about COVID-19.

The N3C harnesses the extensive resources of the NCATS-funded Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program hubs, the Center for Data to Health (CD2H), and NIGMS-supported Institutional Development Award Networks for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR), with overall stewardship from NCATS. The Center is taking multiple precautions for security and privacy to keep the harmonized data safe within NCATS' protected cloud infrastructure.

To access the data, researchers must register with N3C, meet several requirements and submit a Data Use Request through the N3C Data Enclave for review by the N3C Data Access Committee. In addition, researchers requesting access to or working within the N3C Data Enclave are encouraged to assemble collaborative teams with diverse expertise in such areas as clinical research, statistical analysis, and informatics to make the best use of the resource.
