About the Creativity Hubs Program

Creativity Hubs is the signature strategic initiative of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR). Over the past five years, Creativity Hubs competitions have funded eight exciting projects.

The OVCR's Creativity Hubs program brings together teams of investigators across campus from diverse disciplines to propose solutions to address major societal challenges. Projects supported by the program innovate solutions, bring together exciting new ideas, and lead to sustainable, large-scale opportunities. The OVCR supports and facilitates the hub-based research development model to grow and nurture comprehensive research activity at Carolina. The program this year will continue to solicit proposals from any interdisciplinary teams proposing transformational projects from diverse disciplines, with the goal of funding up to two new Creativity Hubs for the campus in 2023.

NEW! For the 2023 competition, one of the hub awards will be made in a special data science category that is being jointly funded by the OVCR and UNC's new School of Data Science and Society (SDSS). Teams that decide to target the special data science category must propose projects that have an interdisciplinary emphasis as well as grounding in theory and methods applied to the entire data life cycle. The OVCR/SDSS Creativity Hub opportunity aims to demonstrate and enhance the utility of existing or newly developed data collections to create hypotheses and catalyze interdisciplinary discoveries across disciplines.
