NC TraCS Award Announcements

In June 2021, NC TraCS received 32 pilot grant applications for 3 programs:

  • $5K - $50K Pilot Grants
  • FastTraCS
  • Emerging Challenges in Biomedical Research (ECBR) – Health Equity – partnered with SOM Office of Research

Seven $5-50K and two ECBR Health Equity applications were recommended for funding:

    Project Title: Safety, Tolerability, and Biosignature of Humanized Prebiotics in Healthy Adults
    Planned TraCS services to be utilized: Core Laboratory Facilities and Translational Technologies
  • Wubin Bai, PhD (Assistant Professor, Applied Physical Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences)
    Project Title: Non-invasive optoelectronic systems for diabetes health monitoring at the skin interface
    Planned TraCS services to be utilized: Biostatistics ; Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) ; Core Laboratory Facilities and Translational Technologies ; FastTraCS (Commercialization); Regulatory – IND & IDE Support; Trial Innovation Unit
  • Genevieve Clutton, PhD (Research Associate, Microbiology & Immunology);
    Project Title: Evaluating the role of the CD8/GLUT1 axis in dysfunctional anti-viral immunity in obesity
    Planned TraCS services to be utilized: Biostatistics ; Grant Proposal Development ; Mock grant reviews
  • Brian Diekman PhD (Asst Professor, Biomedical Engineering) and Doug Phanstiel PhD (Assistant Professor, Cell Biology & Physiology)
    Project Title: Genomics and genome editing to establish new drug targets for osteoarthritis

  • Joshua Niznik, PharmD, PhD (Asst Professor, Division of Geriatric Medicine & Center for Aging and Health, Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy, Schools of Medicine and Eshelman School of Pharmacy) and Jennifer Lund, PhD (Associate Professor, Epidemiology, Gillings School of Global Public Health )
    Project Title: Validating Claims-based Definitions for Deprescribing Using Electronic Health Records: Bridging the Gap Between Clinical and Administrative Data Sources
