Mentor students virtually in APSA's summer research program

graphic for virtual summer research program

COVID-19 has disrupted research across the country and many summer programs that individuals rely on to learn, grow, and gain mentorship. In response to this concern, the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) would like to connect individuals to labs that may need VIRTUAL help or are able to mentor students VIRTUALLY.

APSA's Mission

  • Support individuals who are traditionally underrepresented in science and medicine who have been disproportionately affected by the ongoing pandemic.
  • Facilitate research relationships between individuals and institutions with the goal of increasing diversity in the MD/DO-PhD pipeline.

For mentors

APSA is looking for research scientists who are interested in virtually mentoring students who are underrepresented in science and medicine. Mentees should complete a research project, with assignments including:

  • Mentored independent study or literature search
  • Coding/Programming (Python, C, MATLAB, R, etc.)
  • Data analysis
  • Scientific writing

Please note that mentorship can involve introducing your mentees to your research, your field, and research papers including your own. It is not required for mentors to create an independent project.

APSA enthusiastically welcomes research mentors from all institutions and fields. If you are interested in having a mentee this summer, please apply to be a mentor.

APSA will send you a list of resumes from individuals that are interested in your field and have skills that are useful for your project. You will have the option to pick which student(s) you would like to join your lab.

Program Requirements:

  • Lab mentors meet their mentees virtually at least once per week.
  • The lab PI meets the mentee at least twice.
  • The students works an average of 20 hours/week virtually in the lab.
  • The mentor helps the student prepare a short final presentation.

Some applicants may not be able to engage in VSRP without funding. However, the baseline assumption is that mentees are not funded. While we strongly encourage student stipends, if you cannot fund your students, you can still be a mentor. The recommended stipend is $2,000 for 8 weeks (which roughly translates to under $12.5/hour for eight 20 hour weeks).

Once you agree to host a student, you are responsible for onboarding them as you do any other summer research member of your lab. APSA facilitates the match, but cannot guarantee outcomes for either the sponsor or the student. You are welcome to continue your mentorship relationship beyond eight weeks.

Deadline: May 1, 2021
