Wake Forest announces RFA for Non-Human Primate Studies

Wake Forest Primate Signature Program provides access to nonhuman primates (NHPs) and related resources for studies that advance the CTSA network's translational research objectives. To assist new NHP researchers, the Program is providing funds and significant technical and faculty support for pilot studies, including in vivo studies conducted at Wake Forest, with no requirement for the awardee to be on-site. Ex vivo and data projects are also supported. The objective is to facilitate the collection of data from NHPs in support of applications for extramural funding.

The Vervet Research Colony (VRC) consists of approximately 300 Caribbean-origin vervet monkeys (aka African green monkeys; Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus), spanning neonatal to geriatric ages. The colony includes a range of human-relevant phenotypes such as spontaneously hypertensive animals, as well as a small cohort of insulin-resistant and diabetic vervets for use in metabolic research. The animals, as well as extensive lifespan phenotypic, tissue, and data repositories are available for use.

Wake Forest is offering two awards in 2021, each with a budget cap of $20,000. They will consider scientific requests that translate preclinical or clinical observations, and prioritize non-terminal studies.

One award aims to target proposals which can utilize archived biorepository samples/tissues, data and/or imaging as part of the study design. These data can facilitate longitudinal, cross-sectional, or cohort type studies. A second award is open to all categories of research.

VRC biorepository contents include:

  • Plasma/serum/CSF/urine
  • Tissue collections
  • Phenotypic data, including morphometrics, lipids, and metabolic syndrome criteria
  • CT and MRI imaging
  • Reproductive histories

Examples of repository studies include age-related differences in lipoprotein character and function, longitudinal measures of the microbiome, or genomics.

Statement of Eligibility

Applications are open to faculty members of CTSA supported institutions, or post-doctoral KL2 trainees.

Application Process

Applicants must submit a Letter of Intent (1 page maximum) by March 26th, 2021 to: redcap.link/m08i4k4j. An invitation to apply, or notification that you have not been selected, will be sent by April 5th 2021.
