Notice of Special Interest: CTSA Program Applications to Address COVID-19 Public Heath Need – Earliest Submission date May 4

The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute wants you to be aware of a “Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program Applications to Address 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Public Heath Need” released this week.

There are three Opportunities included in this notice.

  • PA-18-591“Administrative Supplements to Existing NIH Grants and Cooperative Agreements (Parent Admin Supp Clinical Trial Optional)” - due date: May 4, 2020.
  • PAR-19-099“Limited Competition: Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program: Collaborative Innovation Award (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)” - First receipt date July 10, 2020. Requires UNC and 2+ partner CTSA organizations
  • PAR-19-100“Limited Competition: Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program: Exploratory Collaborative Innovation Awards (R21 Clinical Trial Optional)” due date - July 10, 2020. Requires UNC and 1+ partner CTSA organization.

The stated purpose of the NOSI: “The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to highlight the urgent need for research on the 2019 novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). NCATS is particularly interested in projects focusing on the use of informatics solutions to diagnose cases and the use of CTSA-supported core resources (e.g., advanced scientific instruments, highly-specialized facilities, and regulatory expertise) to facilitate research on COVID-19 and advance the translation of research findings into diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines.”

Submission Information:

  • The Administrative Supplement must be administered through the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute. John Buse, signatory co-PI of the parent grant is required nominally to be the PI.
    • The project does not have to link directly to the aims of the UNC CTSA grant.
    • Priority will be given to submissions using the NC TraCS services.
    • NC TraCS leadership believe that the proposals that have the highest likelihood of success would have a methodological focus and potential high impact.
    • The budget is limited to $500k for one year, though not defined in the documents provided. We can revisit with our project officer in the context of specific proposals. NCATS will consider any 24 month requests as well.
    • NC TraCS will submit a limited number of applications to NCATS. Please provide a one-page letter of intent ASAP so we can discuss it with you (brief background, draft aims, statement of impact/innovation, investigators, approximate budget, and timeline).
    • Full proposals and budgets will need to be submitted to NC TraCS by April 24.
  • The U01 and R21 proposals requirements are well described in the respective PAR. Do note the requirement for partnership with CTSA institutions. NC TraCS is happy to support these efforts, but these proposals should be routed through your department or center.
