ORCID iD for Publications and Grant Applications: Create and Connect Yours Today

Publishers and funding agencies are increasingly integrating and requiring ORCID iDs in their publication submission and grant application processes. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), for example, has announced plans to expand its integration of ORCID for efficiency and transparency.

ORCID provides each researcher with a unique and persistent digital identifier (ORCID iD) to distinguish themselves from other researchers. An individual’s ORCID iD comes with an associated online record for linking their scholarly activities to the iD. Registering for an ORCID iD and linking research activities in an ORCID record provides researchers with several benefits, including:

  • Enter Once, Reuse Often. The ability to submit an ORCID iD with a manuscript submission or with a grant proposal. Publishers and funders use ORCID iDs to streamline submission workflows and to link published articles to authors’ ORCID records, increasing discoverability of the authors’ other works. With the ORCID holder’s authorization, individual publishers and funders will automatically push a researcher’s publications or grant citations into the individual’s ORCID record.
  • Comprehensively Collect Research Activities. Connecting an ORCID iD to all of one’s research activities in a scholarly record that stays with the individual throughout their career enables easy discovery and association with the researcher. Research activities may include publications, grants, patents, presentations, datasets, artistic works/performances, peer reviews, and other works.
  • Disambiguate Names. If two or more researchers share a name, each person can distinguish their work from the others’ with the ORCID iD. Researchers who publish using different versions of their name or change their name during their career can link these name variations together with the ORCID iD.
  • Increase Discoverability. Researchers can raise their visibility by adding their ORCID iDs and linking their ORCID records to their websites, email signatures, and publications.
