Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) Lunch and Learn Series: Study Designs: Case-control, Cross-sectional, and Ecological Studies
This introductory-level virtual session will provide an overview of the observational case-control, cross-sectional, and ecological study designs used in clinical and epidemiological research. Attendees will learn strengths and limitations of each design and potential application to their research interests.
This event is being cross-promoted by the NC BERD Consortium, a collaboration of the CTSA-funded BERD cores at UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Duke University School of Medicine.
Learn MoreThe NC TraCS Biostatistics Seminar Series is appropriate for those with a basic familiarity with statistics. These seminars introduce topics not often included in STATS 101.
In this seminar Jeff Laux, PhD, will discuss how variables can be selected for inclusion in statistical models.
You do not have to be affiliated with UNC-Chapel Hill or UNC Health to participate in this seminar. However, you must be affiliated with a university or health care organization and register using an affiliated email address.
Please note: This seminar will not be recorded and materials will be shared during the seminar or with documented attendees only. Attendance may be gathered from Zoom attendance reports.
Postdoctoral fellows who have secured a faculty position and junior faculty interested in applying for the NC TraCS K12 mentored career development program are invited to learn more about the program at an upcoming information session. This round of applications is for positions that would begin July 1, 2027.
The same information will be presented at each information session (October 23, 2026, 10-11 a.m. OR November 10, 2026, 2-3 p.m.) followed by time for questions and discussion. All sessions are in-person ONLY & held in Mary Ellen Jones 3116.

This session provides an overview of changes to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant application requirements, including new Common Forms that will be required for due dates on or after January 25, 2026.
In particular, this presentation will focus on the Biosketch and Current and Pending (Other) Support forms, which will need to be completed using the SciENcv tool. It will include demonstrations of SciENcv, as well as ORCID iD creation and linking steps. The presentation aims to prepare researchers for the new NIH requirements by providing detailed instructions and resources to ensure compliance.
This program is offered by the Health Sciences Library and led by Katherine Howell. It is part of the Grants and Compliance and Advancing Clinical Research Skills workshop tracks.
This session is being offered remotely via Zoom only. Registrants will receive a Zoom link.
The 2024 NIH Public Access Policy includes several significant changes from the previous policy, and applies to all NIH-funded manuscripts accepted for publication on or after July 1, 2025. Learn more about what has changed, how to comply, and what to expect going forward.
This workshop is offered by the UNC Health Sciences Library and the Scholarly Communications Office, and led by Collin Drummond and Katherine Howell. It is part of the Grants and Compliance and Advancing Clinical Research Skills workshop tracks.
This workshop is being offered remotely via Zoom only. Registrants will receive a Zoom link via email immediately after registration.
Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) Lunch and Learn Series: Statistical Power: Understanding The Inputs and How You Come Up with Them
This virtual session will cover approaches to estimate statistical power, sample size, and effect estimates to be considered in the study design phase.
This event is being cross-promoted by the NC BERD Consortium, a collaboration of the CTSA-funded BERD cores at UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Duke University School of Medicine.
