In the TraCS Data Science Lab's August seminar, David Friedlander, MD, MPH, TDSL Research Scholar and Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology, will introduce the landscape of healthcare payment models — from foundational mechanisms to more advanced, value-based approaches. This session will introduce simple models, such as fee-for-service, to more complex but common models, such as prospective payment. Friedlander will also discuss more complex arrangements including bundled payments, capitation, and value-based purchasing. We will examine how these models influence provider behavior, healthcare costs, and patient outcomes, as well as discuss the data challenges and opportunities associated with analyzing payment systems. By the end of the seminar, participants will gain a solid understanding of how various payment models function and how they impact the financial and operational dynamics of healthcare systems.
