Biomedical Informatics tools and services are crucial to managing large and diverse data sets. NC TraCS offers the following services to help investigators mine and manage these data with advanced statistical, mathematical and computational techniques.
Carolina Data Warehouse for Health

Curated Data Sets
- MarketScan® Commercial Claims and Encounters Database
- The MarketScan® Commercial Claims and Encounters Database (MSCCAE) from Thomson Reuters (Healthcare) Inc. contains de-identified, person-specific health data including clinical utilization, expenditures, insurance enrollment/plan benefit, inpatient, outpatient, and outpatient prescription information. The data cover over twenty million individuals annually, and include private sector health data from approximately 100 payers, and can be linked to track detailed patient information across sites, types of providers, and over time.
The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research holds an annually renewable license for the Commercial Claims and Encounters Database for the years 2000 through 2009.

- NC Medicaid Data
- NC Division of Medicaid Assistance (DMA) Claims Data with coverage beginning January 1, 2002. These data are made available through the Carolina Cost and Quality Initiative (CCQI) - a collaborative partnership between UNC's School of Public Health and the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Research proposals must be submitted for approval by a review committee. There is a cost associated with obtaining and using these data.
- NC State Employees Health Plan Data
- NC State Employees Health Plan Data with coverage beginning January 1, 2001. These data are made available through the Carolina Cost and Quality Initiative (CCQI) - a collaborative partnership between UNC's School of Public Health and the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Research proposals must be submitted for approval by a review committee. There is a cost associated with obtaining and using these data.
